PAGASA's cyclone alert as of 5 p.m. Monday warned that Haima will cross into the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday evening, after which it will be given the local codename "Lawin".

As of 5:30 p.m. Monday, Lawin was located 1,155 km  East of Virac, Catanduanes. It was earlier seen packing maximum sustained winds of up to 175 kph and gustiness of up to 215 kph.

It is forecast to move west-northwest at 24 kph, and is expected to be 400 km east of Casiguran, Aurora, by Wednesday afternoon.

Lawin is forecast to cross Ilocos Norte and Apayao through Thursday and may exit the PAR by Friday, October 21.

"Environmental conditions will favor continued intensification, peaking at 145 knots (over 268 kph) by (Wednesday afternoon)," the JTWC said in its 5 p.m. Monday update. This would make Haima/Lawin a Category 5 "supertyphoon" comparable to Yolanda just before it makes landfall.

By its own separate reckoning, the JMA expects Lawin to become a "violent" typhoon by Wednesday afternoon, with a forecast strength of 198 kph—still a major Category 3 typhoon. — GMA News
